Homage to the Flag and to Martí.

The Municipal Historical Archive and the subsidiary of the Union of Historians of Cárdenas convened the first scientific workshop in honor of the Flag and our national hero José Martí, on May 19, 1990. During the cataloging process of the funds of the newly founded Archive of the city in 1989 as director of the center, arranging the files we found a significant collection of documents related to the commemoration of the Centennial of the Flag in Cárdenas, in May 1950. Various acts were carried out, conferences, poetry contests, the students, a card placed in the avenue of Sáez remembers the winners, the one of adults the prize was obtained with his ¨ Canto a la Bandera¨, the odd Matanzas poet Carilda Oliver Labra.

Two events that were firsts, attended by renowned intellectuals, the ninth National Congress of History, chaired by the historian of the city of Havana, Doctor Emilio Roig de Leusechering. Among the agreements adopted is his proposal that _Cuba does not owe its independence to the United States_ later gave title to his important book. Another conclave took place on April 11, 1950, for the first time the Academy of History was meeting outside the city of Havana. The meeting chaired by the historian Emeterio Santovenia, was held at the Liceo Cardenense. Among the participants was the General of the War of Independence Enrique Loynaz del Castillo.

This is how the idea of the Scientific Workshop that we presented to the ideological department of the PCC, to the Provincial and National Archives was born, in co-sponsorship with the UNHIC affiliate, the then President Lic Deysi Lauchy informed at her request.

The Party and the government in the territory supported the initiative by promoting all the conditions for the assistance and accommodation of the national participants.

The first scientific event in homage to the Flag and José Martí, on May 19, 1990 was held at the Sierra Maestra Theater, with the attendance of more than a hundred participants. The Master Conference was given by Dr. Julio Le Riverend, President of UNHIC Nacional, at the end of his presentation, he suggested that a similar workshop be held every five years, an agreement that was approved. Subsequently, Dr. Hortensia Pichardo spoke who expressed concepts of her research on one of the topics of the event.

The director of the National Archive Dra. Beralda Salabarrìa in her words congratulated the initiative of the archive management, as well as the director of the Provincial Archive Lic Graciela Milian. Several Professors from the Faculty of Philosophy and History of the University of Havana participated. From the Cardena branch its founders, among them the Historian of the city Lázaro Miranda and Lic Guillermina Pérez, municipal Methodologist of History.

On May 19, 1990, the commemoration began with a parade of students of the different teachings from the José Martí Park that culminated in the Flagpole. Every year the parade is held. A bronze plaque was placed on the facade of "La Dominica" as a reminder of the Event. The Scientific Workshop concluded in the afternoon with the delivery to the participants of a historical summary. At eight thirty at night the commemoration ended with a cultural political act attended by the people, the closing words were delivered by the then first party secretary in the province of Luis Álvarez de la Nuez; then the Moncada Group offered a concert. In 1995 the second workshop was held at the Official House Theater, with the presence of historians from Matanzas and directors and specialists of Archives from various provinces of the country, Holguín, Havana, Camagüey, Santa Clara, Cienfuegos. Among the guests were researchers Adys Cupull and Froilán González.

In 2000, for the 150th anniversary, the magisterial conference was held at the Municipal Library, given by Dr Eusebio Leal, the president of the Institute of History was Colonel Raúl Izquierdo Canosa, and historians from other provinces. Professors from the University of Havana and the president of the provincial UNHIC Lic Juana Ortiz Ricardo and its executive, as in previous years. In 2005, at the Museum of the Battle of Ideas, the keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Pedro Pablo Rodríguez, researcher at the Center for Martian Studies. Renowned historians of Matanzas and our flag city attended all the events. In honor of the Flag and José Martí on May 19, 2010, the Solemn Assembly of People's Power met at the Cárdenas Theater, at the proposal of its President, we will give the Conference on the anniversary, They were invited the members of the Cardena branch, representatives of the centers of culture and education, teachers and students of pre-university education.

In 2015 The Event was held at the ¨Oscar María de Rojas ¨ Museum, the Master Conference was given by the president of the Institute of Cuban History Dr. René González Barrios. On behalf of the UNHIC affiliate, we gave a diploma of recognition to the historian Clara Emma Chávez, for her investigative work on Emilia Teurbe Tolón. The book “With the light of its star” was presented that day. 165 years of the Cuban flag¨ of a collective of authors of which we are part. In the gallery of the Cárdenas theater at two thirty in the afternoon a photographic exhibition with the title ¨Defendiendo la Bandera¨ was inaugurated, snapshots that we had taken in parades, on December 6 and May 1 with the national ensign as the center then the closing cultural political gala was held. The call for this 170th anniversary of the Flag and the 125th anniversary of the fall of José Martí has been postponed, several historians from the province had already confirmed their participation, among the proposed topics are La Bandera identity and nation and Martí in the historical present .
