Horse-driven cars give Cárdenas its distinctive touch

Cars, these picturesque means of transport driven by horses, give their distinctive touch to Cárdenas. also known as Flag City, for having waved the national ensign for the first time in the country, in the year 1850. It is characterized by its industrial heritage, especially the Arechavala factory, the maximum expression of the imprint of sugar and rum in the national culture and economy. The factory itself is an important location of industrial heritage with notable tourist value for continuing to operate and be the cradle of the famous Havana Club rum.

Crab Monument (terrestrial)

Sculpture created by Alberto Muñiz Morales representing a huge crab. Symbol of the city Cárdenas, in Matanzas, for the abundance of these animals in the area.

History

The crabs must have saluted the caravels of Sebastián de Ocampo when, bojeando to the Island of Cuba by orders of the advanced Diego Velázquez, entered and delimited the bay of Siguapa or Siguagua (Bahía de Cárdenas). They must also have interposed their fight against the first lumberjacks who extracted the wood from the area, as well as those who set up the dry docks for the repair of their boats.

Monumento a las madres

Mothers Monument

It is located on Ave. de Sáez, Calzada corner, in the town of Pueblo Nuevo Norte, in the Cárdenas municipality, of the Matanzas province.

History

On August 15, 1945, Councilor Pedro Parravicini Medina presented to the Municipal Chamber a proposal to erect a marble monument to the mothers, which will be paid for by public subscription and governed by an Executive Committee. In the section of the chamber dated August 28, 1945, it was unanimously approved. The monument is taken out to a National Competition where 18 sculptors participate and their models are exposed to the public, in the Pro Calles Civic Committee. On December 16, 1945, the jury met, chaired by Don Juan Véliz Pérez and the model of the sculptor Mario Santi García, professor at the San Alejandro School, was selected by secret ballot. The entire town cooperated in its construction, highlighting the teachers and students of the public and private schools of the city.

MAUSULEO

Mausoleum of the Martyrs.

Place where the remains are kept 238 mambises belonging to the Cárdenas Brigade killed in combat in the Cárdenas municipality war of 1895 - 1898 against Spain. After the war of 1895-1898, in Cárdenas it was decided to build a mausoleum to store the remains of the officers and soldiers killed in the war against Spain. For those purposes; A commission was established, chaired by General Carlos María de Rojas, Chief of the Cárdenas Brigade, whose mission was to locate, unearth, and transport to the city the mortal remains of the fallen combatants.
