Flora and fauna.

The territory is partly occupied by vegetation on the sandy coast: creeping plants and a well-defined tree strip, with inlet grapes, mangroves and coastal xeromorphic thickets. In the area of the thing and also, in swampy areas, is the so-called Red Mangrove. In general, there is a potential savanna vegetation, in a certain way of copernicias, stationary groves, where the White Mallow, that of Pigs and others appear.
Mammals, in the first place, are the least represented. Within these living species, only 54 families are reported, highly composed of bats, some rodents and a single representative of insectivores, apart from the species introduced by man.
In order to get an idea of the species existing in the area, it may not be necessary to offer all those found so far, but, for example, of the inserted class it is interesting to highlight the lepidopteran order (the butterflies), of which the museum "Oscar M. de Rojas "de Cárdenas has a valuable collection of more than 140 species.
Marine molluscs have suffered greatly in the region due to the great contamination that exists in the bay, a phenomenon - which, although it has diminished in recent years - has destroyed almost all its flora and fauna. Terrestrial molluscs are not as affected, but they are less and less localized due to factors related to urbanization, industrialization and the absence, in previous times, of a conscience of afforestation. Species of the crustacean class abound in Cárdenas, a group included in arthropods, especially Crabs.
Among the species of birds that have been located in the area are the Alcatraz (western pelican) in Cayo Grande and on the coasts the Pájaro Bobo, the Pink Gull and the Boba, the Gallego and the Galleguito. Other very common species are, among others, the Barn Owl and the Sijú Banana Tree, the Zunzún, the Pitirre, the Mockingbird and the Sparrow.
