José Antonio Echeverría Library. Municipal Library of the city of Cárdenas linked to the National Program for Reading and the Editorial Libertad Program.


History
The José Antonio Echeverría de Cárdenas library was inaugurated on March 13, 1972 in the old medical school located at Céspedes No 618% Calzada y Velásquez. Its inauguration was part of the activities carried out within the framework of the fifteenth anniversary of the assault on the Presidential Palace and the assault on Radio Reloj, where the student leader José Antonio Echeverría, from Cardena, to whom he owes his name, loses his life.
The Library serves two branches: Humberto Álvarez, which was founded on July 23, 1976, the first in the province founded in the CAI and the Fray Candil library, founded on June 1, 1986 in the José Smith Comas power station. In 1973 the first diploma that was received for participating in the ideological day "History will absolve me" was delivered.
During these years the center has obtained diplomas for its outstanding participation in culture weeks, exhibitions of circles of interest, fulfillment of plans, etc.
In 1983, the center was closed to move to a larger premises. This was a critical year for library activities in our city, since after being moved, it remained closed until 1986, the new premises located on Calle Ayllón no. 314 e / Aranguren and Jerez underwent a restoration and so it was reopened in 1988, the Municipal Union was asked to grant the status of a Model Center, which materialized in 1989.
Then on December 10, but in 1992, the distinction of “From the people and for the people” was awarded after a remodeling of the institution but made by the workers' collective itself.

The Library provides various services to the population, such as:
• Internal and external book loans to people of all ages who visit us.
• Reading and cultural promotion activities for all ages.
• Assembly of exhibition in work centers of the ephemeris of the month.
• Sending books every three months (on a rotating basis) to the 52 mini-libraries we serve and reading promotion activities with them.
• Carrying out book and cultural promotion activities with the elderly. (Popular Art workshop, Grandfather's House, Nursing Home).
• Attention to non-formal routes (Bebetecas)
• Care for children with hearing and language problems (librarianships)
• Bibliographic and ephemeris information by telephone.
• Morning work centers and schools.
• Reference services, for which there is a Dictionary of Synonyms and antonyms, an Encyclopedic Oceanographic Dictionary, a Grijalva Dictionary, a geographical Atlas and a Spanish Language Dictionary, among other materials.
• Attention to children with social disadvantage and behavior problem.
• Newspaper library service (publications received)
• Reading and cultural promotion activities for the members of the Canary Association.
• Orientation and information for students of all ages and education to carry out their tasks.
• Attention to the circulars of readers and friends of the book.
• Attention to ANCI through book promotion activities
• Montage of exhibitions by local artists.
• Literary, historical, scientific, artistic, and musical bibliographic exhibitions.
• Music services with the background of cassettes that we have.

• Socio-cultural community project, inserting artistic creations with literary creation, with the aim of promoting the habit of reading and growing in assistants and the provision of library services.
• Experimental literary workshop under the auspices of the town, a space where writers can enrich their literary knowledge through meetings, contests, literary appreciation classes, colloquia and other modalities of interest.
