Mothers Monument

It is located on Ave. de Sáez, Calzada corner, in the town of Pueblo Nuevo Norte, in the Cárdenas municipality, of the Matanzas province.

History

On August 15, 1945, Councilor Pedro Parravicini Medina presented to the Municipal Chamber a proposal to erect a marble monument to the mothers, which will be paid for by public subscription and governed by an Executive Committee. In the section of the chamber dated August 28, 1945, it was unanimously approved. The monument is taken out to a National Competition where 18 sculptors participate and their models are exposed to the public, in the Pro Calles Civic Committee. On December 16, 1945, the jury met, chaired by Don Juan Véliz Pérez and the model of the sculptor Mario Santi García, professor at the San Alejandro School, was selected by secret ballot. The entire town cooperated in its construction, highlighting the teachers and students of the public and private schools of the city.

Opening

The municipal mayor Rubén Mendiola Arana and the Executive Committee of the work, together with the people in general, inaugurated the monument on May 12, 1946, Mother's Day, which represents a pride for the city of Cárdenas.

Description

The marble monument depicts a mother hugging her two children. Located on a raised masonry base with 10 steps on its front and bottom. On both sides of the base of the monument are two carved marble plaques related to the inauguration.

Right side:

“Because you are the purest and most sacred legacy that God left us! Because when you are alive, you encourage us in the fight, and, dead you comfort us with your memory !: Because your spirit of sacrifice and sacred devotion creates an altar of love, faith and hope in our chests! With sublime and veneration, sacrificed respect and filial affection, we dedicate this monument to you, which will be maintained through time, with infinite fervor from generation to generation. ”

Left side:

"This monument to mothers is erected at the initiative of the councilor Dr. Pedro Parravicini Medina, according to a motion he presented and was approved in the Municipal Chamber of the Cárdenas City Council, section August 28, 1945.

Tribute

In the fight for the liberation of the child Elián González Brotón, on December 6, 2001, what has been called the Battle of Ideas began in Cuba. In support of such a human cause, the mothers and grandmothers of the city organized a march to this monument, offering flowers.
